Why would European-ness matter or be significant? Just following a name is a very weak argument. What's the practical effect of requiring a country to be European in order to gain EU membership? To me, it is clear that the reason that European-ness matters to the EU leaders is because through insisting on it they can exclude most non-white countries... and that doesn't seem right to me. What else do they achieve by insisting on it? You have to look further. Why would European-ness matter or be significant? Just following a name is a very weak argument.
